The square

St James's Square sits on the western side of Bath, one of the quieter streets in a city that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The terrace was built between 1790 and 1793, forty-five houses around a communal garden that the residents still maintain.

This house faces south across it. The front is honey-coloured Bath stone ashlar, hand-cleaned and repointed, with an arched green door at street level and three tall sash windows to each floor above.

Inside, the first-floor drawing room takes the whole front of the house. The walls are dry-scraped plaster, left with their patina, and the windows look into the trees of the square. Behind the house, timber-framed doors open to a walled garden of gravel paths and perennial planting.

A Grade I-listed Georgian terraced townhouse on St James's Square, Bath, built 1790 to 1793 to John Palmer's design for the square; five storeys and a sub-basement, over 4,600 sq ft, five bedrooms, a walled garden designed by David Oakley, restored by conservation architect Rhys Brookes from five separate apartments back to the original floor plan.
