473 MacDonough Street
MacDonough Street is the kind of block that gets a person’s name attached to it. The architect Henry B. Hill, working out of his father Amzi Hill’s practice, designed so many of its rows that a preservationist once told Brownstoner the street should simply be renamed Hill Street. His documented Romanesque Revival houses sit close by, 490 MacDonough among them and 480A, built in 1892. The whole corridor falls inside the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District, designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on September 14, 1971.

The Compass listing dates No. 473 to 1892 and credits Hill, and while no primary source pins this exact house to either the year or the architect, both are of a piece with the Hill rows that flank it. A public building card lists it as 1899; the discrepancy is the usual one between a tax record and a designation-quality history. What stands is a three-story Romanesque Revival brownstone, two-family, with a galvanized iron cornice and a partial-width rear addition that adds a room to every floor, roughly 2,960 square feet and five bedrooms in all.

The interior kept its best original detail: a carved marble mantel, an inlaid parquet floor border, original wood pocket doors, bay windows, and decorative fireplaces, with kitchens and baths brought up to date. It sold in June 2026, with Compass on the listing.
